Sassy

Diggin' Deep

Good trouble Records 2011

The dynamic duo of female pop-punkers that is Sassy deliver an album of catchy jams that stick in your head like a honeybun!  Speaking of honey, the first track is the infectious Honey Bee.  The dual female vocal lines in there bring to mind Dance Hall Crashers, though the music has a foot-tapping stomp to it!  The slow, almost dreamy crawl of the guitars and smooth vocals on Wild Summer reminds me of cross between Belly and Sleater Kinney.  But the dancehall rock of So Bad It's Good recalls the old hits of the 50s, but with a punkier vibe to it.  Hints of the Ramones surface throughout the song.  Devil's Dance is overtaken by a pulsing rocka-billy rhythm and an almost Misfits inspired phrasing to the vocals.  Buzzcock punk riffs burst out of the gate on She's A Liar, but the song downshifts slightly into some Juliana Hatfield-meets-Veruca Salt chorus.  Sunny days are conjured in the Ramones heavy Something About You.  And the Ramones influences continue on It Really Hurts.  Surprisingly, the main riff on Don't Wantcha echoes with Anthrax's bouncy thrash style.  The album closer Blink Once is a full force punk anthem which is like a polished version of something Bikini Kill might have written.  Lynda and Christa know how to run vocal harmonies off each other to maximum effect.  Sassy's light and saccharine-filled pop-punk forces every muscle in your body to sway with the infectious vocals bouncy riffs.  Despite the emotional tribulations of some of the lyrics once Diggin' Deep is finished you are left feeling upbeat with a renewed spring in your step.
