Fit For Fight

Hells Headbangers 2012/Roadrunner Records 1984

I have been music trading with Fenriz of Darkthrone for quite some time now but one of the first albums that he turned me on to was this overlooked diamond of traditional heavy metal from Denmark.  Taking cues from the catchy hooks and infectious vocal lines of Tokyo Blade, Witch Cross delivered one of the best traditional heavy metal albums I have ever heard.  Night Flight To Tokyo gets this hook fest underway.  A mid-tempo beat and a bunch of Mercyful Fate/Tokyo Blade melodies flow like honey out of the speakers while Kevin's unmistakable vocals draw you in with their warm, inviting tone.  A plethora of guitar soloing precedes a slow spell and delicious bounce into a total rocking groove.  A more ominous feeling can be felt in the main riff of Face Of A Clown.  An old school riff that drips with a 1970s vibe launches Rocking The Night Away.  You can feel the grit and excitement of partying on the sunset strip echo from every chord on this song.  The soaring vocals and hip-swaying riffs instantly set your head to banging.  A galloping tempo drives Fight The Fire.  The gang vocal harmonies on the chorus drive home the power of the song.  Witch Cross have saved the best for last with the album's final song, Alien Savage.  A street tough main riff scorches the song and then the fiery, soaring vocals for the chorus just blow me away.  The melodic lead guitar line morphs into a joyous hook at the 4:00 mark leaving my experience complete.  Hells Headbangers has done the world a huge favor by unearthing and rereleasing Fit For Fight.  If you don't have this album and enjoy traditional heavy metal the old school way, then do your ears a favor and get it as soon as possible and rock the night away!
