Throne of Katarsis
In Nomine Dei Nostri Satanus
Sathanas In Gloriam Productions
2008
Throne of
Katarsis, one of the best of the recent crop of black metal traditionalist
upstarts from Norway, combines with the satanic perversion of Sathanas In
Gloriam Productions to bring us a glimpse of one of their cult musical ritual
performances, this time at the Sathanas In Gloriam festival in Baroeg Rotterdam.
A gloomy and eerie introductory film sets an ominous tone before the live set
begins. The concert hall is dark and the camera work gives the room the
impression of a catacomb. We as viewers are at a perfect distance to
behold this majestic evil summoning. Four different cameras capture the
live work providing multiple angles and the frequent shifting between these
alternate views keeps the concert from becoming stagnant. We are even
treated to the occasional view of Vardalv behind his drum kit. Though the
focus is rightly on the commanding and blasphemous antics of Infamroth. He
holds the audience and the DVD viewer in his thrall as his ghastly vocals
freezing guitar riffs seer themselves into the minds of the onlookers. His
in sacrilegious invocations in between the songs are an excellent example of how
one should approach their obligations as a frontman. The set list is
comprised of four tracks from the debut An Eternal Dark Horizon (Symbols of
Winter, Funeral Moonlight, Nattaander, Under Guds Hud) and one from the demo (Skogens
Kall). Their icy and atmospheric
black metal translates surprisingly well to the live environment.
I wish the guitars were a little louder in the mix but this is a minor issue in
the grand scheme of things. The
concert ends as it began, with some infernal fire blowing in true underground
heretical fashion. As a bonus
we are treated to a frantic and somewhat confusing trip through Norway and even
an all too brief sneak peak of the new album from Throne of Katarsis. SIG
Productions has done a wonderful job with the packaging for the DVD as well and
it reminds me somewhat of the packaging Crushing the Holy Trinity comp with its
satanic artistic aesthetics. All around this is a well done and
excellently presented visual accompaniment to one of the best modern black metal
bands around. A truly cult work of Satanic art in all aspects.
