Unanimated
In the Light of Darkness
Regain Records 2009
Swedish
veterans reunite and bring us another album of blackened melodic death metal.
For those of you who are familiar with and still worship Unanimated's previous
two albums (I know I do!) then In the Light of Darkness is a welcome return.
With their new album we find Unanimated dwelling in a middle area between the
polished maturity of Ancient God of Evil but with song structures and the
atmospheric brutality of In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead. With
Retribution In Blood we discover trembling melodies sliding up next to mid-tempo
Stockholm styled death metal. The equally moving Endless Beyond is up next
with a haunting main melody that acquiesces to blasting death metal violence.
The riffs transition to a slower paced and moodier excursion into standard
Swedish down-tuned chugging riff only to resurrect the same chilling melody
which infects my brain all day long. For possibly the most aggressive
track on the album we are treated to Diabolic Voices whose speedy beats and
darkly flowing riffs embolden the darkness within the music and summons a
tempest of deathly mayhem. Quickly curving melodies and double bass
drumming gush forth from the structures of The Unconquered One like blood from
an open wound. Deep hollow melodies characteristic of the Swedish scene
are folded into mid-paced sawing riffs and somber leads on Serpent's Curse.
Acoustic guitar and a windy conglomeration of voices paint a scene of beautiful
nostalgia on the album's closer, Strategia Luciferi. In the Light of
Darkness continues proudly onward with the legacy of Unanimated and is a worthy
successor to their early work. The album is a well crafted endeavor of
melodic death metal that spins strands of dark matter into a corporeal entity of
atmospheric malevolence. WORSHIP!!!!
