Vesen
Masterpiece
Demo CD
2003
I can't believe how much quality black thrash is coming out of Norway these
days. Another one of the dominant acts that is clawing its way out of the
underground is Vesen. The closest reference musically that comes to mind is
somewhat of a cross between Aura Noir with its catchiness and Audiopain with
their more apparent musical complexity. The first couple of songs are a little
more straightforward. But there is a definite modern feel to some of these
compositions. "Great Whore Enigma" is a perfect example of this sentiment. I
even find myself unconsciously headbanging to "Worshipper" and the rest of the
tracks while listening to this at maximum volume, THE only way to listen to
this!!!!! Heh heh. The sound on this demo CD is surprisingly great. It's a
nice mix of grime and crispness. The drums may be a little high in the mix but
it doesn't detract at all from the listening experience at all. But I guess
Sverre Daehli (Audiopain) who engineered this should know by now what black
thrash should sound like. The artistic direction of the CD booklet seems to be
centered around rape and torture. I wish I had lyrics to this though. I think
the song that stands out in my head the most is the title track. The main riff
is just so catchy and driving. I think Norway is coming into its own as a
center for the modern thrash revival but their national style is inherently more
Necro than anyone else's. I think Aura Noir summed it up best, "Black thrash
Attack!!!!!!!!!!!!"
