Rudimentary Peni
No More Pain EP
Southern Records 2008
Legendary and
long running British crust punk icons deliver another middle fingered affront to
the scene establishment with their latest 10 song EP. From the outset A
Handful of Dust lays the blueprint for basically the whole release.
Lightning quick Discharge inspired punk is what you will get shovel-fed down
your throat by Rudimentary Peni. Eyes of the Dead features a more Rock n
Roll groove and some nifty female vocals during the chorus. Each song
rolls right into the next leaving the listener gasping for air as each nuclear
charred guitar riff plows through their head like a cruise missile. Grave
Object has a more rhythmic chugging structure but that is completely forgotten
once the undulating hammerfest of Doodlebug Baby cleaves through bone and meat
with acrid guitar chords and angry vocals! The album ends on a strange
note as Rudimentary Peni interpret a classical piece of music, Pachebel's Cannon
in E making it discordant and shrill. The guitars fuzz out and nearly give
this track a sunny day pop-punk feel. If you like Discharge style
crust punk in small doses then the No More Pain EP should be right up your
alley. Rudimentary Peni are legends for a reason and that is mainly for
penning some in-your-face apocalyptic punk that is hard as nails while
maintaining a semblance of humanity underneath.
