Trinacria
Travel Now Journey Infinitely
Season of Mist 2008
Founded by
members of psychedelic Norwegian black metallers, Enslaved and a lesser known
noise band Fe-Mail, Trinacria is pretty much what one would expect, a blending
of black and death metal with a psychedelic mentality and huge swaths of sonic
noise textures embedded deeply into each song. Turn Away opens the album
as a repetitive trance inducing monolith of a song. It steadily builds
with layers of noise and disturbing incidents of a sonic nature lending the
track a deep space sort of feeling. The Silence (which is a misleading
title) bursts forth at light speed and then constantly breaks into odd sounds
and strange textures. The guitar riffing on this track is really
indicative of the founding members' prime band, Enslaved. The tracks
builds towards a psychotic crescendo until it finally collapses on itself and a
tranquil guitar gives the listener a moment to breath and escape the
claustrophobia. Make No Mistake is a straight up Enslaved throw-away track
that has been built upon with different effects to make it more interesting and
I find this song to be the weakest on the album. Psychedelic to the
extreme, Endless Roads has a ton of room to breath and the listener just loses
themselves within its infinite vastness, and samples, like radio signals, drift
in at odd angles only to fade and deep growls bellow through a dense fog of
droning white-noise. Then there is the title track. For its first
two minutes a haunting yet angelic female voice creates a mood of refreshing
loneliness. Then she soars over the top of hypnotic guitars and dry deep
death metal vocals. The female vocals become more and more manic and
insane as the song progresses through its 9 minute length. This is a good
album that is both expansive in sound and adventurous in its compositions.
However it pales in comparison to Enslaved's quality and focus. If your
looking for an exploratory side journey with a familiar feel, then Trinacria is
the mead that sates your thirst.
